Discover One of Europe’s Most Rewarding Road Trips
Small in size but incredibly diverse, Montenegro is one of Europe’s most underrated destinations for a self-drive adventure. In just one week, you can wander through UNESCO-listed medieval towns, cruise one of the world’s most beautiful bays, drive spectacular mountain roads, hike through dramatic national parks and unwind beside crystal-clear lakes.
One of the greatest advantages of Montenegro is how easy it is to explore by car. Distances are relatively short, allowing you to experience an incredible variety of landscapes without spending hours behind the wheel.
This seven-day itinerary is designed for first-time visitors who want to experience the very best of Montenegro at a relaxed pace.
Before You Set Off
Fly into
Tivat Airport is the most convenient gateway for this itinerary, although Podgorica Airport also works well.
Car Hire
Hiring a car is highly recommended. Roads are generally in good condition and driving gives you the freedom to stop at scenic viewpoints, discover hidden villages and explore beyond the main tourist centres.
Journeys by Design Tip
Avoid collecting your hire car during the busiest afternoon arrival period if possible. The roads around Kotor can become congested during peak summer months.
Day One – Arrive in Kotor
Driving: Tivat Airport to Kotor – approximately 15 minutes
There’s no better introduction to Montenegro than arriving beside the breathtaking Bay of Kotor.
Spend your first afternoon settling into the UNESCO-listed Old Town, where narrow cobbled streets wind between centuries-old churches, lively squares and traditional stone buildings. Take your time wandering without a map—it’s one of those places where getting pleasantly lost is part of the experience.
As the evening approaches, find a waterfront restaurant and watch the light soften across the bay.

- The city walls
- Waterfront promenade
Stay
Kotor Old Town or nearby Dobrota.

Day Two – Kotor & Perast
Driving: Around 30 minutes in total
Begin early with the climb to San Giovanni Fortress.
Yes, there are hundreds of steps, but the panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor are worth every one.
After descending, follow the coastline north to the elegant town of Perast. Quieter than Kotor, Perast is home to beautiful Venetian architecture and offers one of the most picturesque waterfronts in Montenegro.
Take a short boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks before enjoying a long waterfront lunch.
Highlights
- Fortress hike
- Perast
- Boat to Our Lady of the Rocks
- Sunset by the bay

Day Three – Kotor to Durmitor National Park
Driving: Approximately 3½–4 hours
Today’s journey showcases just how dramatically Montenegro’s landscapes change.
Leave the Adriatic coastline behind and head inland towards Durmitor National Park, where towering limestone peaks, glacial lakes and deep canyons create one of Europe’s finest mountain landscapes.
The drive itself is part of the adventure, with winding mountain roads revealing spectacular viewpoints at almost every turn.
Spend the afternoon walking around the peaceful Black Lake (Crno Jezero), one of Montenegro’s most beautiful natural settings.

Žabljak

Day Four – Durmitor National Park
Wake up surrounded by mountains and spend the day exploring one of Montenegro’s greatest natural treasures.
Whether you choose a gentle lakeside walk or a more challenging mountain hike, Durmitor rewards every level of explorer.
Adventure seekers may also wish to experience rafting on the Tara River, home to Europe’s deepest canyon.
Highlights
- Black Lake
- Tara Canyon
- Scenic viewpoints

Journeys by Design Tip
Even during summer, temperatures in the mountains can be significantly cooler than along the coast. Pack an extra layer.

Day Five – Durmitor to Lake Skadar
Driving: Approximately 3 hours
Today’s route takes you south towards Lake Skadar National Park, the largest lake in the Balkans and a haven for wildlife.
This quieter corner of Montenegro feels wonderfully unspoilt.
Spend the afternoon enjoying a leisurely boat trip through lily-covered waterways, spotting herons, pelicans and traditional fishing villages along the shoreline.
As the sun begins to set, the lake becomes one of the country’s most peaceful places to unwind.
Stay
Virpazar

Day Six – Budva & Sveti Stefan
Driving: Approximately 45 minutes
Return to the Adriatic coast and discover another side of Montenegro.
Budva combines sandy beaches with an atmospheric medieval old town, while nearby Sveti Stefan offers one of the country’s most photographed coastal views.
Although the island itself is reserved for guests of the luxury hotel, the viewpoint above the causeway is one of Montenegro’s most iconic photo stops.
Spend the afternoon swimming, enjoying fresh seafood or exploring the coastal promenade.
Highlights
- Budva Old Town
- Mogren Beach
- Sveti Stefan viewpoint

Day Seven – Return to Tivat
Driving: Approximately 30 minutes
Before your flight home, enjoy one final breakfast overlooking the bay.
If time allows, stop in Porto Montenegro, an elegant marina lined with cafés, boutiques and luxury yachts.
It’s a fitting place to reflect on a week spent discovering one of Europe’s most captivating destinations.
